The first photographic & narrative celebration of Cape York First Nations gender and sexuality diversity that challenges existing dehumanising violent colonial queerphobic stereotypes, offering justice to the richness, wellbeing, diversity and lived experiences of Cape York Rainbow mob. It is time to welcome the unwelcome home: Land back, bodies back.

Welcoming the Unwelcome:
A Black Rainbow Homecoming

This is a 3-4 year First Nations LGBTQIA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy Human rights photography grassroots project commencing in 2025 that will be based in the Cape York Peninsula of remote Far North Queensland, Australia. This project is led by international Human Rights Lawyer, First Nations LGBTQIA+ Scholar, Photographer and Creative, Marijke Bassani who is a Lama Lama/Lamalama, Binthi Warra (Guugu Yimithirr Nation) and Bulgun Warra gender and sexuality diverse Cape York woman raised on the east coast lands of her people in the Cape York Peninsula. This project will involve Marijke taking portraits and collecting contemporary personal narratives about culture and community life from Cape York First Nations LGBTQIA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy peoples for collation into a photography book. All proceeds generated from the book will be returned directly to all those who featured in it to build financial wellness and autonomy for Cape York Rainbow mob.
